Adapting Massage Techniques for the Oncology Client 8 CEU
This 8-hour introductory course will provide an overview of the Cancer process and the safe application of adapted Swedish massage techniques. The participant will review advanced intake assessment to correctly define the Oncology population. Providing a massage session, tailored to their clients’ unique needs will be discussed, demonstrated and return demonstrated by each participant. Adapting massage technique, with regard to pressure, client positioning, touch frequency, session length and possible indications of ineffective client response will all be covered.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will accurately be able to identify the unique characteristics and needs of the Oncological client.
- The participant will review and understand Cancer, pathophysiology of metastatic disease.
- The participant will outline and demonstrate an adapted massage session for the Oncological client, incorporating safe and effective adapted massage techniques, taking into consideration, the unique as well as medically preferred concerns for this population.
- The participant will explore and demonstrate understanding of the function the different members of the oncology team as well as the family dynamics involved with the coordination of care of the oncology client.
- The participant will review and demonstrate basic understanding of the global effects of combination treatment using chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
- The participant will have a thorough understanding of both relative and absolute contraindications for adapted bodywork.
- The participant will know how and to whom they should refer their client should they not be able to provide service safely or effectively.
- The Participant will explore pathways to advanced education to meet the Oncology Educational Community standard.
Understanding Adjustments to Bodywork at End of Life… Hospice Massage – 6 CEU
This 6 CEU Introduction to Hospice massage prepares the participant to effectively understand the hospice process as it relates to end of life decisions of a terminally ill client. The course is designed for manual therapists who wish to have a deeper understanding of the terminally ill client and seek to provide these clients with bodywork that is appropriate, effective and timely.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will have a thorough understanding of the Hospice process: what criteria need to be met for Hospice care to be recommended.
- The participant will explore the client’s transition to Palliative care and understand the difference between a client’s choice for Palliative vs Hospice care as it impacts on end of life.
- The participant will develop an understanding of the grief process as it relates to the end of life.
- The participant will have a thorough understanding of the stages of the dying process.
- The participant will explore various bodywork options that can be utilized throughout the dying process and correctly identify appropriate modalities as the client progresses through the stages of death and dying.
- The participant will design as massage session for a Hospice client, making correct massage adjustments using basic strokes to provide sensitive, timely touch, and will explore opportunities for advanced education/ training in Hospice massage.
Embracing Diversity in Your Daily Massage Practice 4 CEU’s
The participant will explore the element of Diversity in their massage practice and seek to incorporate client preferences with regard to ethnic and cultural norms. Common intake assessment questions will be examined and reviewed. Providing a massage session, tailored to their clients’ unique needs will be discussed, demonstrated and return demonstrated by each participant. Adapting massage technique with regard to pressure, client positioning, touch frequency, session length and possible indications of ineffective client response will all be covered.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will accurately be able to identify the unique needs and expectations of the client with regard to diversity.
- The participant will outline and demonstrate an adapted massage session for the client, incorporating safe and effective adapted massage techniques, taking into consideration, the ethnic as well as cultural concerns for this population.
- The participant will have a thorough understanding of both relative and absolute contraindications for adapted bodywork.
- The participant will know how and to whom they should refer their client should they not be able to provide service safely or effectively.
Safe application and Use of Essential Oils for the Massage Client 6 CEU
Module 1 – 3 CEU’s
The participant will receive current information about the historical as well as current use of essential oils and medicinal plants in everyday health and wellness. The participant will explore how essential oils can be integrated into their existing personal and professional practice. The participant will review current guidelines with regard to obtaining various tiered certification and entry level requirements for formal licensure. Students will have the opportunity to experience essential oils first hand.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will gain a thorough understanding of the use of essential oils from a historical perspective, understanding the evolution of aromatherapy.
- The participant will gain a thorough general understanding of safe essential use in the clinical healthcare setting as well as in private practice
- The participant will know how to access additional various means of certification as well as licensure requirements as a RA (Registered Aromatherapist.)
Module 2 – 3 CEU’s
The participant review and explore basic essential oils chemistry, basics of essential oil botany and have hands on practice utilizing essential oils, discerning single oils from blended oils in their environment and bodywork sessions with their clients.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will gain a thorough introductory understanding of essential oil chemistry and botany.
- The participant will safely demonstrate basic use of essential oils with clients.
- The participant will demonstrate a thorough understanding of relative indications, relative and absolute contraindications of safe use of essential oils.
Adapting Massage Techniques for the Clinically Complex Client – 8 CEU’s
The participant will review advanced intake assessment to correctly define the targeted special population, to include patients with: degenerative neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary and cognitive issues, as well as those patients receiving treatment for cancer. Providing a massage session tailored to their clients’ unique needs will be discussed, demonstrated and return demonstrated by each participant. Adapting massage technique with regard to pressure, client positioning, touch frequency, session length and possible indications of ineffective client response will all be covered.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will accurately be able to identify the unique characteristics of each targeted population : Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease, Hypertension, Congestive Heart Failure, Stroke, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and Asthma.
- The participant will outline and demonstrate and adapted massage session for each targeted population: neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and pulmonary deficits.
- The participant will accurately be able to identify the unique characteristics of the client with cognitive deficits: Dementia, Brain Injury, Neurological Disorder.
- The participant will outline and demonstrate an adapted massage session for the client experiencing cognitive deficits.
- The participant will accurately be able to identify the unique characteristics of the client with Cancer. This is a general overview only.

Foundations of Oncology Massage – 24 CEU’s
This comprehensive 24 CEU course is designed for the massage therapist seeking to provide bodywork for the oncology patient throughout their cancer experience. The participant will learn about cancer’s origin, identification, staging, past and current and treatments, and develop an understanding of how best to manage their client with a cancer diagnosis. A historical timeline for treatment over the past 100 years will be explored. The participant will review an advanced intake assessment to correctly define the Oncologic population, and consider the potential side effects from treatment prescribed as it impacted the lymphatic, immune and other body systems Providing a massage session tailored to their clients’ unique needs will be discussed, demonstrated and return demonstrated by each participant, for a variety of cancer presentations, with an emphasis on breast and other gynecological cancers, prostate, skin, colon, and lymphoma. Adapting massage technique with regard to pressure, client positioning, touch frequency, session length and possible indications of ineffective client response will all be reviewed with return demonstration by the participant. Finally, Hospice and Palliative care will be explored if and when end of life issues are presented to the oncology client.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will review and understand Cancer, pathophysiology of metastatic disease.
- The participant will learn how to gather the appropriate information on their oncology client, intake/assessment.
- The participant will learn the potential physical as well as emotional complications that can arise from both short term and long term, treatments

- The participant will explore and demonstrate understanding of massage as respite care for the caregiver(s) of the oncology client.
- The participant will review and demonstrate basic understanding of chemotherapy as a treatment option for the oncology client.
- The participant will be able to identify three commonly used venous access devices used by oncology clients receiving chemotherapy – chest port, peripherally inserted central catheters and ports.
- The participant will review and demonstrate basic understanding of radiation as a treatment option for the oncology client.
- The participant will review and demonstrate basic understanding of surgery as a treatment option for the oncology client.
- The participant will review and demonstrate basic understanding of the global effects of combination treatment using chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

- The participant will explore the Hospice and Palliative care treatment options as end of life decisions for the oncology client.
- The participant will explore and demonstrate how to provide self- care to manage potential therapist fatigue and potential burn out.
- The participant will review ethical concerns surrounding the oncology population In general.
- The participant will accurately be able to identify the unique characteristics and needs of the Oncological client.
- The participant will outline and demonstrate an adapted massage session for the Oncological client, incorporating safe and effective adapted massage techniques, taking into consideration, the unique as well as medically preferred concerns for this population.
- The participant will have a thorough understanding of both relative and absolute contraindications for adapted bodywork.
- The participant will know how and to whom they should refer their client should they not be able to provide service safely or effectively.
- The participant will understand the design behind 24 hrs. of continuing education and the programs endorsed by the Society for Oncology Massage (S4OM) and explore “pathways to certification.”
- The participant will review opportunities for future certification in oncology massage.
Advanced Lymphatic Mobilization – 16 CEU
Course Description:
Lymphatic Mobilization is a form of very light, rhythmic, and repetitive touch that encourages lymph flow in the body, utilizing Vodder techniques. This type of bodywork is helpful for detoxification, post operative fluid shifts and can assist with edema, scar tissue, spider veins, redness, acne, headache, and mental clarity.
This is a 16-hour advanced course that will provide an in-depth overview of the lymphatic system and the application of advanced lymphatic massage techniques focusing on clients with more complex disease processes. Advanced body mapping as well as advanced sequencing of session will be explored. The participant will learn the advanced application of Lymphatic drainage techniques within the massage therapists’ scope of practice. The instructor will cover certification options for formal certification.
Class Learning Objectives:
- Students will learn about the benefits of advanced lymphatic drainage mobilization with an overview of pressure, pace, lymphatic flow, and lymph node location.
- Students will learn about the advanced anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, neuro-lymphatics, and integration with other body systems.
- Students will review basic Vodder techniques of pumping, Stationary and Rotary circles and Scoop.
- Students will learn the history of lymphatic drainage massage.
- Students will learn about specific advanced lymphatic disorders, client presentations.
- Students will learn about contraindications and indications of advanced lymphatic mobilization reviewing acute infections, inflammation, cardiovascular problems, venous obstruction, and specific illness where clients are under physician supervision.
- Students will learn specific lymphatic mobilization for the head and neck discussing anatomy, physiology, massage pressure, massage direction, and specific sequence of movement.
- Students will learn about the effects of each technique on the head and neck.
- Students will learn specific lymphatic mobilization techniques for the trunk of the body discussing anatomy, physiology, massage pressure, massage direction, and specific sequence of movement.
- Students will learn about the effects of each technique on the trunk of the body.
- Students will learn about specific lymphatic mobilizations for the arms discussing anatomy, physiology, massage pressure, massage direction, and specific sequence of movement.
- Students will learn specific lymphatic mobilization techniques for the legs discussing anatomy, physiology, massage pressure, massage direction, and specific sequence of movement.
- Students will learn about the effects of each technique on the legs.
- Students will learn how to apply each technique in a sequential manner for a complete lymphatic mobilization treatment.
- Students will explore Cosmetic Body Sculpting and the effect on the lymphatic system.
- Students will explore Manual Lymphatic Drainage, MLD, and Complete Decongestive Therapy, CDT, as it relates to their scope of practice as licensed massage therapists. Students will explore pathways to certification as a Lymphatic Specialist.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate an advanced understanding in anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.
Students will demonstrate proficiency in identifying when it is appropriate to apply lymphatic drainage techniques.
Students will be able to identify and perform each lymphatic drainage technique as it relates to specific parts of the body.
Each student will be able to appropriately perform a sequential lymphatic mobilization.
Advanced Lymphatic Mobilization 2 – 8 CEU’s
Course Description:
Lymphatic Mobilization is a form of very light, rhythmic, and repetitive touch that encourages lymph flow in the body, utilizing Vodder techniques. This type of bodywork is helpful for detoxification, post operative fluid shifts and can assist with edema, scar tissue, spider veins, redness, acne, headache, and mental clarity. The Participant must have completed prior training, 16 CEU hours preferred or its equivalent.
This is an 8-hour advanced course that will provide an in-depth overview of the lymphatic system and the application of advanced lymphatic massage techniques focusing on clients with surgical augmentation for clients desiring physical enhancement using cosmetic plastic surgery. The participant will learn the advanced application of Lymphatic drainage techniques within the massage therapists’ scope of practice. The instructor will cover certification options for formal certification.
Learning Objectives:
- The participant will review basic Lymphatic Mobilization, understanding the difference between aesthetic and reconstructive surgical options.
- The participant will demonstrate understanding of various liposuction techniques and procedures, simple vs 360 degree.
- The participant will review and explore the possible complications of surgical intervention as these are considered “elective procedures.”
- The participant will review and explore common breast augmentation procedures, pre and post operative factors, rationales and complications.
- The participant will review and explore common torso augmentation procedures, pre and post operative factors, rationales and complications.
- The participant will review and explore common arm, leg and buttock augmentation procedures, pre and post operative factors, rationales and complications.
- The participant will learn and practice Mobilization sequences for chest and torso and review the necessary documentation.
- The participant will learn and practice Mobilization sequences for arm, legs and buttock and review the necessary documentation.
Introduction to Lymphatic Mobilization 6 CEU’s
This is a 6-hour introductory course that will provide an overview of the lymphatic system and the safe application of lymphatic massage techniques. The participant will learn in depth, the function and physiology of the lymphatic system, and demonstrate the safe application of Lymphatic Drainage techniques; hand placement, manual mobilization of lymphatic fluid using correct hand techniques, and have a thorough understanding of both relative and absolute contraindications within the massage therapists’ scope of practice. The instructor will cover certification options for formal certification.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will have an understanding of normal lymphatic system function, as well as the etiology and pathological presentation of lymphatic insufficiency/failure, both primary and secondary.
- The participant will have an understanding of how lymphatic insufficiency/failure, impact on the client with edema.
- The participant will be able to accurately identify the client at risk while, learning basic evaluation and treatment protocols for Lymphatic Drainage massage.
- The participant will be able to list contraindications and cautions with the application of safe Lymphatic Drainage massage.
- The participant will understand which techniques fall within the therapists’ scope of practice.
The participant will understand the important differences between Lymphatic Drainage massage techniques and Manual Lymphatic Therapy Certification.
Applied Ethical Standards for Today’s Massage Practice – 4 CEU’s
This CEU opportunity addresses a variety of areas of concern facing today’s massage therapist. The participant will review ethical standards of practice to adequately define the professional therapist’s role in the therapeutic relationship with their client. A review of Pennsylvania laws regarding massage licensing, code of conduct along with standards of ethical behavior will be provided. Diversity, inclusion and equity in massage practice will be discussed developing a cultural competence. Providing a massage session tailored to their clients’ unique needs as well as problem solving potential ethical dilemmas encountered by the therapist will be explored, discussed, as well as participant sharing of their own experiences or areas of conflict, along with adaptive communication strategies regarding possible indications of ineffective or inappropriate client response.
Learning Objectives:
- The participant with review current Pennsylvania law regarding the role and boundaries of the massage therapist.
- The participant will be able to list five strategies that reinforce adequate boundaries.
- The participant will demonstrate a basic understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity to employ in their practice, developing cultural competence.
- The participant will demonstrate critical thinking while problem solving when confronted with possible conflicts of interest, placing them at risk for negative outcome(s) with their client.
